When you zip up a sports jacket on a windy or rainy day, you probably don’t think much about the science behind your comfort. Yet, the fabric that keeps you dry and warm is the result of decades of textile innovation. Water-resistant and windproof membranes are designed to protect you from the elements while allowing your body to breathe and move freely. Here’s a closer look at how they work—and what to consider when choosing your next jacket.

What Is a Membrane?

A membrane is an ultra-thin layer—often just a few micrometers thick—laminated to the inside of a jacket’s fabric. Its job is to act as a barrier against wind and water while letting moisture from your body escape. This balance between protection and breathability is what makes a jacket both comfortable and functional during physical activity.

There are two main types of membranes:

  • Microporous membranes, which contain millions of microscopic pores. These pores are small enough to block water droplets from the outside but large enough to let water vapor from sweat pass through.
  • Hydrophilic membranes, which have no pores. Instead, they move moisture through chemical diffusion, absorbing water vapor on the inside and releasing it on the outside.

Waterproof or Water-Resistant – What’s the Difference?

People often use these terms interchangeably, but they mean different things. A waterproof jacket has a membrane that can withstand high water pressure without letting moisture in. This is measured in millimeters of water column pressure—the higher the number, the better the protection. A water-resistant jacket, on the other hand, usually has a surface treatment (called DWR – Durable Water Repellent) that makes water bead up and roll off, but it won’t keep you dry in heavy or prolonged rain.

For running, cycling, or hiking in light rain, a water-resistant jacket is often enough. But for mountain adventures or stormy conditions, you’ll want a fully waterproof model.

How the Membrane Blocks Wind

Wind can chill your body quickly, especially when you’re sweating. A windproof membrane prevents air from penetrating the fabric, helping you retain warmth. At the same time, its breathability allows moisture to escape, so you don’t end up clammy inside. This combination makes windproof jackets ideal for activities like cycling, running, or hiking in cool, breezy weather.

Breathability – The Invisible Comfort

A jacket can be completely waterproof, but if it isn’t breathable, you’ll soon feel damp from your own perspiration. Breathability is often measured by how many grams of water vapor can pass through a square meter of fabric in 24 hours (g/m²/24h). The higher the number, the better the fabric’s ability to move sweat away from your body.

Manufacturers constantly work to improve this balance. Some use combinations of membranes and ventilation zones, while others develop hybrid materials that adapt to your body temperature and activity level.

The Role of Surface Treatments

Even the best membrane needs help from the outer layer. Most sports jackets are treated with a DWR coating that causes water to bead up and roll off instead of soaking into the fabric. Over time, this coating wears off—especially after washing—and should be renewed with a specialized product to maintain performance.

A good tip is to wash your jacket with a mild, membrane-safe detergent and avoid fabric softeners, which can clog pores and reduce breathability.

Popular Membrane Technologies

Several brands have developed their own membrane systems, each with unique strengths. Some focus on maximum waterproofing, while others prioritize light weight and high breathability. Well-known examples include technologies used in outdoor gear from brands like Gore-Tex, eVent, and Polartec. Despite their differences, they all rely on the same principle: keeping water and wind out while letting your body breathe.

When choosing a jacket, think about how you’ll use it. For everyday commuting, comfort and lightness may be most important, while backcountry hiking or skiing calls for maximum protection.

The Future of Membranes

Innovation in this field is far from over. The next generation of membranes is becoming more sustainable, as manufacturers phase out fluorinated chemicals (PFAS) from water-repellent coatings and experiment with bio-based materials. At the same time, smart textiles are emerging—some jackets can already adjust ventilation automatically based on humidity and temperature.

The sports jacket of the future won’t just shield you from the weather—it will work with your body to create the perfect microclimate for performance and comfort.
